Thinning Hair? Here’s What I Tell My Clients to Do

Thinning Hair? Here’s What I Tell My Clients to Do

From supplements and scalp treatments to gentle hair care and modern solutions, hair color legend and CEO & Founder of ROIL, Amanda George, shares the step-by-step approach she recommends when hair begins to thin.

Hair changes as we age, sometimes gradually, and sometimes seemingly overnight.  For many women, thinning hair can feel confusing, frustrating, and even frightening.  After decades behind the chair, this is the step-by-step approach I share with my clients when it begins to happen.

“Hair loss can feel frightening, but the earlier you address it, the more options you have to support healthy growth.”

Start From Within

Hair is one of the first places the body stops investing energy when it feels depleted. For that reason, I often begin by looking at nutritional support.

One supplement many of my clients respond well to is Nutrafol, which addresses several factors connected to hair health including stress, hormones, inflammation, and nutritional balance. It’s not an overnight solution, hair recovery always takes time, but it can be an excellent foundation for supporting stronger, healthier growth.

I have witnessed remarkable results for stress-related and age-related thinning: “stronger, thicker hair and visible new growth.” Nutrafol is one of my go-to recommendations for long-term hair density.

You are able to purchase Nutrafol at ROIL Salon, making it easy to begin immediately.  We also sell Nutrafol via our online store at ROIL LIFE.

Support the Scalp

Once internal support is in place, the next step is often focusing on scalp health.

Healthy follicles are essential for healthy hair growth, and treatments designed to stimulate the scalp can sometimes make a meaningful difference. One option I often suggest is Harklinikken, a customized topical solution designed to support the follicle and encourage healthier hair growth.

Like most hair therapies, consistency is key. Results often appear gradually over several months.

Be Gentle With the Hair

When hair begins thinning, it also becomes more fragile.

This is where daily habits can either support the hair, or unintentionally cause more breakage. I often advise clients to:

  • brush very gently
  • avoid pulling or aggressive brushing when the hair is wet
  • use soft brushes or wide-tooth combs
  • reduce excessive heat styling

Hair that is thinning should be treated almost like fine fabric, carefully and thoughtfully.

Small adjustments in how the hair is handled can make a significant difference.

Reduce Friction

Another simple but effective step is reducing friction, particularly while sleeping or drying the hair.

Sleeping on a silk pillowcase allows the hair to glide rather than catch on cotton fibers, which can help prevent breakage and tangling.

After washing, I often suggest using a soft microfiber towel wrap instead of a traditional terry cloth towel. Hair is most vulnerable when it’s wet, and reducing friction during this stage can help protect fragile strands.

Choose Products That Work With Your Treatments

When hair is thinning, heavy styling products can weigh the hair down and sometimes interfere with scalp treatments.

Instead, I encourage clients to rotate lightweight shampoos, conditioners, and styling products that support hydration and scalp balance without coating the hair.

The goal is simple: healthy shine, movement, and a balanced scalp environment.

When a More Targeted Approach Is Needed

If thinning continues, some clients choose to move toward a more targeted medical approach.

One option many women explore today is Hers, which contains formulations including minoxidil, an ingredient that has been clinically shown to help stimulate hair growth by increasing blood flow to the follicles and extending the growth cycle.

When used consistently, this treatment can make a noticeable difference for many people experiencing thinning.

Looking at the Bigger Health Picture

Hair loss is often connected to what’s happening elsewhere in the body.

Many people today are using peptides or medical weight-loss treatments, and rapid weight loss or certain medications can sometimes contribute to increased shedding.

When this comes up, I always encourage clients to speak with their hormone doctor or a functional medicine practitioner. Being honest about everything you’re taking is important, because understanding the full health picture can help identify what might be contributing to hair changes.

Hair health is often closely connected to overall wellness.

What Has Worked Best for Me Personally

Like many of my clients, I’ve explored a number of these approaches myself.

What has worked best for me is a combination of internal support and consistent hair care.

My personal routine includes:

  • maintaining strong nutritional habits
  • scheduling more frequent trims to keep the ends healthy
  • doing monthly Milbon hair treatments to maintain strength and condition

Hair tends to respond best when it’s supported from several directions at once.

ROIL Salon can help with many of these routine needs.  You can book online today or call for an appointment: (310) 275-2808.

When Clients Need a Little Extra Help

Sometimes, even with the best care, hair density doesn’t fully return the way we hope.

The encouraging news is that there are now beautiful, natural-looking solutions available.

Some of my clients have chosen to have hair transplant procedures, particularly to restore the hairline, and when done well the results can look incredibly natural.

Another easy and immediate option is clip-in extensions. They’re simple to use, non-damaging, and can instantly add fullness where it’s needed most. For many women, they provide a wonderful confidence boost.

The Most Important Thing to Remember

Hair loss can feel frightening, but it is something that can often be addressed when approached thoughtfully.

Starting with internal support, improving scalp health, adjusting daily hair care habits, and moving to stronger treatments when necessary allows us to support the hair at every level.

The key is starting early and staying consistent.

Hair health is a long game, but with the right strategy, it can absolutely improve.

ROIL Salon can help with all your hair health needs.  Book online today or call for an appointment: (310) 275-2808.
